Maria Brito and immigrant from Cuba, came to the United States in 1961. Maria saw the U.S. as a place of endless opportunities, as many Cubans who migrate to the U.S. due to lack of opportunities, poverty and oppression that exist within their own country. Her piece El Patio de Mi Casa, symbolizes the struggles she has experienced with identity and a symbol of transformation once she arrived to this country. The wall in her piece, represents the threshold between the past and the present. The crib symbolizes her childhood and her experiences living in poverty.
A “father is a son’s first hero” (unknown). But what exactly is a hero? The exact definition of a hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. In the eyes of a young boy, it is easy to hold their own father on such a high and honorable pedestal; to them, it is inconceivable that their father could be anything but that strong and courageous figure. Be that as it may, the traumatic, unfortunate events that Elie Wisel was forced through, changed how he perceived his father.
In Sandra Cisneros’ “The House on Mango Street,” the chapter, The Monkey Garden, describes Esperanza playing in the garden with Sally and a few of the boys when things take a turn Esperanza is uncomfortable with. At times, Esperanza is naïve and inexperienced, but other times, she exudes an awareness of someone much older. This awareness comes to light multiple times throughout the novel and Sally is often a catalyst of this awareness – this chapter is no exception. The Monkey Garden showcases the dichotomy that lies within Esperanza; the dichotomy of being both innocent and intuitive, both aware and naïve. Esperanza begins this chapter with a keen awareness.

A house is not a home. A home is somewhere your heart feels content, a place where you feel safe. In fact, a wise person once said, “Home is not a place, it’s a feeling.” This particular theme of home appears several times during Sandra Cisneros’ novella The House on Mango Street. Cisneros uses indirect characterization to show that the main character, Esperanza, feels discontent with her house, and feels as if it is not really her home, because deep in her heart, deep in her mind, she feels that her home is somewhere else, and she feels lost.
Students can face a daily struggle in school, as each one has to study for specific classes to reach a certain goal. Each potential student would then have to choose a goal where he or she would want to reach and, because of that, he or she would push on to escape some item or idea of his or her choosing such as poverty, family or home. Over thirty years ago, Sandra Cisneros published The House On Mango Street, which is a novel made up of vignettes about a little girl named Esperanza and her journey throughout a year’s worth of hardships as a Mexican female. Thomas Jefferson once said,“I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.” This quote can be taken much deeper, with the understanding that the past is just that, history. Of course history still affects the future today, but people focus more on moving forward rather than dwelling on the past. In Sandra Cisneros’ “The House on Mango Street” the author illustrates the idea, using her family members’ past, other residents of Mango Street, and Esperanza discovering who she is, that while the past can make up parts of a person, it does not have to be their whole identity.
Obstacles Numerous people stumble upon obstacles, but only a few can overcome them. Most obstacles are influenced by the values of the society. In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Liesel Meminger overcomes her lack of education and her different beliefs on Jewish people. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet both overcome the obstacle of not being able to be together because of the feud between their families. In “The House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros, Esperanza overcomes the obstacle of not fitting into her society because of her lack of money.
Chiara Maddison Is it possible for people to become fully autonomous without giving up, to leaving behind certain parts of their life? For many people, the answer is no. There may be certain aspects of their culture or society or beliefs of their family that go against what that person has to do to become autonomous. Esperanza, the main character of the book The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, definitely has let go of certain things to achieve her freedom, and this has an effect on her identity. Her desire for autonomy shapes her identity by forcing her to accept the reality that things will have to change in order for her to achieve autonomy. Cisneros illustrates this development and understanding through the use of symbolism.
Society defines home as “a house, apartment, or other shelter. It is the usual residence of a person, family, or household” (“Home”). In The Glass Castle, Jeannette’s definition of home suggests that it is a place for friends, comfort, love, happiness, and financial security. However, home is a complicated topic that can be interpreted in many ways. The Glass Castle clearly describes the pessimistic attributes of home, such as a lack of support and poor parenting.
Those Who Don’t “Those Who Don’t” is a short vignette in Sandra Cisneros's novella, The House on Mango Street, although short, it carries an important theme that allows a more thorough understanding of others - Don’t judge something or someone based on the current info, things can be surprisingly different than you imagined. Esperanza lives in a neighborhood where people see them as dangerous people because of the area. Cisnero develops this theme by using a family who, accidentally, stumbles into Esperanza’s neighborhood. She reinforces the theme by using descriptive words and Esperanza’s own perspective.
“The Fall Of The House Of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe and “ House Taken Over “ by julio Cortazar, both Gothic Literatures explaining the lives of those who are too afraid to live, when they believe in buying themselves happiness. In both stories, the setting is based off two extremely large homes that are being taken care of by siblings, both male and female. They end up excluding themselves from each other's lives and begin to follow a routine based of the house. Both keeping you guessing at the end. Did they disappear?
Maggard 1 Cole Maggard Johnson English 1 6 November 2014 Character compare and contrast Esperanza from House on Mango Street, Melinda from Speak, and Jean Louise from To Kill a Mockingbird, are very interesting characters that seem to not share many characteristics in each of these novels. These three girls were the main characters of their own books, and in each of these books we learned that they don’t have a lot in common. The personality that these three have just shows how different they are. Here are just a few examples that make these three girls different.
I see the faint shadows of towering, tall trees side by side in the forest. It 's dark out. All the critters are asleep and there are no longer the sounds of angry drivers racing down the nearby highway, or shouts of children on the playground a couple blocks down. The white, fluffy, deep snow makes it hard to walk, and my feet are numb from the cold. I have to squint my eyes to make out what 's in front of me.
My engine opened at full throttle and my heartrate bouncing off redline as I saw the black smoke pouring into the sky like a coal factory chimney stack. While my partner and I arrived at the fire scene, the apartment was spitting out flames that crawled three stories high. Then, my partner and I downed our Personal Protective Gear (PPE) and the pulled attack line from the fire truck. Next, without a thought of fear, I entered the burning building. I pressed my left hand against the wall to guide me towards the fire as my right hand firmly gripped the nozzle, I continued into the blaze.
