Brief History of the United States Army Filed Artillery Branch Since the birth of our great nation, the United States Army has relied heavily on the tactical advantages and shear fire power that Artillery armament provides during battle. Shortly after the start of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress quickly realized the pressing need to establish Field Artillery as a standalone branch within the Continental Army. After careful review, on November 17, 1775, Colonel Henry Knox was appointed the position of “Chief” of the newly formed Field Artillery Branch (McKenny, 2007).
