Figurative Language In Beowulf

In the short excerpt of Beowulf that we read, after looking into detail there are some significant signs that show this is a true epic. Through many different tones, characteristics, figurative language, and even more ratifies how this story is an epic. To start, even though we only read an excerpt from Beowulf, the whole story is still very long coming in at 3,182 total lines. Epic poems are usually longer in length so therefore this falls under that category. Overall throughout the poem, it shows us a very worthy subject, this being Beowulf’s heroic adventures to save Herot. The monsters start to terrorize the town and kill everyone in their path. So therefore, the King of Herot, named Hrothgar calls upon Beowulf for his help. Therefore, highlighting the journey of Beowulf concludes that this is the worthy subject they are appointing. Next, this excerpt takes place in the town of Herot where the monsters come to terrorize. The king of this town is Hrothgar and the monsters don’t touch him because of his level of power and royalty. With a historical setting like Herot, this falls under the vast setting of an epic. First he goes to kill Grendel then realizes that Grendel’s mom is out for vengeance. He then travels to her lair when he swims deep in the groggy and evil swamp to fight her. They lash out and battle when finally he kills her. This scene was a big event and highlighted the heroic and brave actions of Beowulf. This also leads into the results of his actions. If Beowulf wouldn't have been able to take down the monsters then it would have affected the outcome of what would've happened.
