Figurative Language In Nikki Giovanni's Migrations, A Fish Out Of Water

In reading Nikki Giovanni’s poems, I read the poems “Migrations”, “I Am Glass”, and “A Fish Out of Water”. Giovanni used great figurative language, imagery and special language choices to create vivid worlds for the readers. For her to create poems that come to life in your mind, she ensured to use excellent figurative language, imagery and special language choices. Her poems kind of give you a taste in reality. It also shows an image in your head of how it would feel to be something other than a human. For example in the poem made by her “Migrations”, her figurative language and imagery gives me an image in my mind that the end of winter is nearing. In this poem she used neither similes nor metaphors but she did use personification. She said “Grasshoppers ignoring the advice Of ants make music to celebrate Winter’s end” which is a human reference to when a human may celebrate when something starts/ends. In another poem I read by Nikki Giovanni, which was named “I Am Glass”, she basically describes how it feels to be glass. She described it very well with figurative language and imagery. She described glass with these lines such as “You can see through me”, “I’m easily hurt”, “and any little pebble can cause a scratch”. It gives me a 3D image in my mind sensing that glass is fragile. She also well described things that would happen in reality, such as “If you blow your breath on me”, “I can fog”. In the 3rd poem I read by Nikki Giovanni, which was named “A Fish Out of Water”, she described how a fish feels when it is thrown away from water. In my mind, I can image birds or house pets wandering around, and find something they’d never seen before. I can imagine little children throwing rocks at the fish for fun, watching it suffer.
