Poetry has a theme, an extended metaphor, and figurative language. What about short stories like “The Circuit”? This topic is interesting because it would highlight the similarities between different styles of writing. This would also show the fundamentals of writing and what components every story has. Another reason why this is interesting is to dig deeper into “The Circuit”. I would like to break down the parts of “The Circuit”. “The Circuit” is a short story by Francisco Jiménez about a boy named Panchito whose family is made up of migrant workers. They are sharecroppers (farmers who exchange food for farming a land) who constantly move from farm to farm based on the produce season, but every time they move, Panchito feels left out. You can’t take what you have for granted, because the next minute, everything could be gone. In this story, Panchito is taking Mr. Lema for granted. He thinks that Mr. Lema is always going to be there for him. Later, when he finds out he is moving, his hopes are crushed. In the story, it says,” That day I could hardly wait to get home to tell Papá and Mamá the great news. As I got off the bus, my little brothers and sisters ran up to meet me. They were yelling and screaming. I thought they were happy to see me, but when I opened the door to our shack, I saw that everything we owned was neatly packed in cardboard boxes.” (paragraph 34) This shows that he is really happy about Mr. Lema teaching him how to play the trumpet. This also shows that he is sad that they are moving. I know he is sad because earlier when they were moving, the story said,”As we drove away, I felt a lump in my throat. I turned around and looked at our little shack for the last time.” This shows that Panchito does not like moving. Because Panchito got the opportunity, he assumed that he could learn the trumpet. This is Panchito taking Mr. Lema for granted. He quickly got disappointed as he was not going to learn even though he thought he was. This is why the theme of “The Circuit” is to not take anything for
