Preston Geerinck Per. 1 4/25/17 Mrs. Granahan-Smith Speech Analysis Atticus Finch of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird tackled the task of defending the case of Tom Robinson who was accused of raping Mayella Ewell.
Racism is one of the most influential concepts that drive people to make the worst of decisions. Atticus Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird” (TKM), uses rhetorical appeals in an attempt to save a black man from being falsely convicted. I believe that the movie version of Atticus’s closing statement was more convincing than the book version. This essay will discuss the rhetorical appeals used both in the book and movie; and why the movie’s version was more effective.

I believe this thematic statement suits the story because throughout the book there are lots of surprises, and most situations don't go the way people predict they will. For example, Aunt Alexandra was first seen as mean, according to her attitude towards Scout. At the end of the book Aunt Alexandra hands Scout her overalls, as mentioned in the story, "the garments she most despised." Because she always wanted Scout to be a lady and wear dresses.
In the argument between Mr.Gilmer and Atticus In to kill a mockingbird about Tom Robinson being found guilty for raping Mayella. There was impressive work of rhetorical analysis (Logos, Pathos, and Ethos). This argument takes place in a courthouse in Maycomb which if packed with the people of Maycomb. The argument between Atticus and Mr.Gilmer was about Tom Robinson to find out if he truly raped and abused Mayella. In the argument between them both used Logos, Ethos, and Pathos.
In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Harper Lee uses negative connotation and vivid symbolism to persuade that being judged by an outward appearance or backstory can affect a person negatively and make the judgers feel superior. Lee uses an outstanding amount of characters to persuade this but some distinctive characters that she uses is Aunt Alexandra and the Cunningham’s. Lee also uses the Ewells and Tom Robinson to persuade her meaning. In chapter twenty-three Scout asks Aunt Alexandra if she can play with Walter Cunningham but Aunt Alexandra declines the request and does not give Scout permission to play with Walter. She explains why plus starts to judge Walter.

Discuss the idea(s) developed by the text creator in your chosen text about the significance of individuals attempt to live unconstrained by conventions or circumstances. Customs, traditions, conventions, mores, norms these have been here since beginning of time and one is expected to follow them without question and pass them on to their offsprings. Majority of conventions are good and meaningful, however some conventions are destructive, harmful and dangerous. One can say that conventions are like cocoons they shield youth and give them a pathway to follow however, when these customs threaten to put down a group in society, one must break out from the cocoon. In the novel, To Kill A MockingBird, the author, Harper Lee, explores characters that attempts to live unconstrained by conventions or circumstances.
Even in a society that, overall, is diverse, people with similar ideas and experiences tend to congregate in small groups, where they are comfortable. It is much easier to remain in homogenous groups, among those who understand each other. When different groups combine, many different life experiences and points of view will be present and will potentially clash. Misunderstanding is bound to occur in some form when individuals of different backgrounds interact. When misunderstandings occur, people tend to respond with violence, fear, or stereotyping.
Although Capote writes of how welcoming and peaceful the Kansas town of Holcomb is, his main purpose of describing the town is to emphasize the changes that take place in the wake of one family’s murder, therefore Capote is able to articulate the shifts in the community into an embodiment of a seventh death. Capote utilizes personification to add a sense of fear to the pallet of feelings that the citizens in Holcomb have been constrained to. He first describes how out of character the town has become simply by their purchase of locks, and goes on to discredit the locks by saying: “Imagination, of course, can open any door---turn the key and let terror walk right in” (Capote 88). The personification of imagination, making it able to open any door, gives the thought of imagination a complex connotation. It makes the reader contemplate of the possibilities that a non-physical concept can make possible in the physical world.
Censorship is an extremely debated topic in America, with people saying it contradicts with what the Bill of Rights has allowed the American people and how it may deny people use the Freedom of Speech. Yet, the censorship of books in American public schools is one of the most controversial topics today because of the use of racial slurs in classic literature, this is the case with To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
