AJ Fikry and Lambiase are characters in The Storied Life of AJ Fikry. The novel follows AJ Fikry’s life: from losing his wife to meeting Maya, his soon to-be daughter. The reader learns that AJ Fikry is a stubborn man who finds comfort in only his books. He lives alone above a bookstore in which he works. One night, AJ loses one of his most prized possessions, a short story called Tamerlane. This results in him calling Lambiase, a police officer on Alice Island. The pain Fikry felt after losing his wife is demonstrated very clearly throughout the book. There are endless references to his wife, Nic, and it is understood that Fikry spends most of his time thinking about her. Though it seems like he will never love again, he and Lambiase both find a partner. Lambiase falls in love with Fikry’s sister in-law Ismay, and Fikry marries Amelia. However, the majority of both characters’ lives are spent alone. They sought refuge in few things, one of which being their jobs. It is shown how passionate Fikry and Lambiase are about their professions. The reader can see how the only joy Fikry receives is from his books. The most instrumental people in Fikry’s life, Amelia, Maya, and Lambiase, all bond with him through their shared interest of books. Lambiase is a determined policer.
