In ancient China, marriage was announced by parents for both males and females. The old saying goes “dictates of parents and words of matchmakers” which means people didn’t have the right to choose their husband and wife by their own wish. They couldn't even refuse the marriage if the marriage was against their will. If the marriage is broken up, it would be seen as unfilial.
