The Elimination: A Survivor of the Khmer Rouge Confronts His Past and the Commandant of the Killing Fields. Rithy Panh is an internationally and critically acclaimed Cambodian documentary film director and screenwriter. Rithy Panh was a young boy when Khmer Rouge revolutionaries arrived in Phnom Penh on April 17, 1975. Starting that day, he and his family were designated “new people”—the revolution’s code for those who needed “re-education”—and forcibly evacuated out of the city. That day began a terrifying experience that gradually took away most of his family, forcing Rithy to survive a series of brutal, and often arbitrarily cruel, ordeals.
Within accordance to Kenneth Robert Jenkens’s novel, The Wilmington Ten, Khalil Gibran Muhammad’s Introduction in The Condemnation of Blackness, Stanley Nelson 's The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution and Damon Davis and Sabaah Folayan Whose Streets?, the interpretation of African Americans being treated unfairly within the court system is clearly portrayed. From the aspects of having an unfair trial, to police brutality, to even murder, racism is a problem that has been going on for various years, that just continues to happen. The Wilmington Ten were a group of teenagers who were wrongly incarcerated in 1971.
In the wildly popular Mexican film, Los olvidados (1950), Spanish director Luis Buñuel exposes the harsh realities of life in Mexico during the 1950’s. Luis Buñuel’s work on Los olvidados portrays a societal loss for all hope due to crime and violence as an infinitely vicious cycle, coupled with addressing the lack of reform for dilapidated living conditions throughout Mexico. In Los olvidados, Buñuel follows Pedro (Alfonso Mejía) a neglected bastard, and El Jaibo (Roberto Cobo) the leader of a gang of homeless children loitering in vacant lots. For Pedro, and the rest of the cast, a series of unfortunate outcomes have been strung together though common ignorance and a lack of self-control. The following line from The Florida Project best sums up the film: “You know why this is my favourite tree? Cause it’s tipped over and it’s still growing.” Spoken by Moonee while eating jelly sandwiches with Jancey on the trunk of a lush, collapsed tree, the line draws a perfect similarity between the fallen tree’s continued growth and the motel residents’ efforts to trudge through poverty despite their representations in society. Sean Baker’s The Florida Project depicts Moonee, a six-year old living at the Magic Castle (a dilapidated motel just outside Walt Disney World) with her unemployed mother Halley.
At some point of your life you meet very special people that carry very similar interests. This creates bonds that can be a very powerful and important part of your life. Some may say that bonds are created between a series of negative events that leads up to friendship. However, this is not true because in The Way, the main characters come together to walk the same path. Each character motivates each other to achieve the overall reason of why they wanted to walk The Camino De Santiago.
In the 2013 film Short Term 12, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, a twenty-something woman, Grace, works at a place called Short Term 12, where she cares for troubled youth. Grace, who is portrayed by Brie Larson strives to make the children in the facility feel loved and cared for, despite the fact that they may never feel like that. Each child comes from a different type of family, and each has their own troubling story; however, when the children are at Short Term 12, their pasts do not define them. Grace treats each person in Short Term 12 as an equal. Throughout the film, a viewer sees Grace’s life when she works at Short Term 12, and the life she has outside of the facility.
Color is a huge part of how people view different emotions and feelings. For an example, when people see the color black, they may feel darkness and loneliness. Using color as a description in books can really help the reader better understand what the author is trying to get across. Color can mean so much more than shades and tints, it can show true meaning and emotion. It's proven that warm colors trigger thoughts of happiness, energy, and optimism.
Rather than using a display of colour for the simple purpose of "spectacle", colours help drive the narrative and become significant "characters" and fundamental to the development of the story, rather than just mere parts of the mise-en-scene. Journeys can range from going to the refrigerator for a late-night snack or as far as traveling the world. The excerpt from Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life written by Wendy Mass shows 2 friends traveling the city to open a box. The poem “Where the Sidewalk Ends” written by Shel Silverstein describes the “place where the sidewalk ends” and the journey you take. Both Wendy Mass and Shel Silverstein convey a common message of how it is important to value the journey you take using repetition and metaphors. Both sources use repetition to emphasize their messages.
The film follows several highly intelligent, highly educated Black women who work at NASA during the 1960’s, when segregation was still largely in effect. The ladies succeeded mainly because of their intelligence, intuition, work ethic, and willingness to take every opportunity presented to them. While this film is intended to highlight the struggle of Black people (women especially) to overcome prejudice and unfair circumstances (hence the title Hidden Figures, which alludes to the fact that many great breakthroughs in knowledge etc is largely misattributed or lacking in proper credit given), the overarching message can be applied to anyone who is suffering from similar circumstances. Picture a usual day of high school in 2016. Brick walls filled with jocks, beauty queens, nerds, the popular ones, and other stereotypical groups of people separating themselves from the others. Now picture high school in the 1950’s, when blacks and whites were separated by schools because one race seemed to overpower the other, which can be demonstrated by the movie Grease. Randal Kleiser, the director, chose to have an all-white cast to portray a 1950’s setting. Many viewers are aware that this movie features racial segregation but it was the “norm” until about 1957, when segregation started to disappear.
Individuality is unaccepted and isolated from our society that embraces conformed values. The Copy Shop and L’homme sans tete are examples of short films that reflect this ironic problem of society where individuals are not identified with their individual morals, but conformed morals enforced by society. The 2001 short film, Copy Shop by Virgil Widrich conveys the idea of conformity. This is done foremost through the metaphor of 'copies' that fill up the film's world that represent conformity, where the composer satirises our society which is filled up by 'copies' of individuals sharing conformed ideals.
Get Out (2017) is a horror film directed and written by Jordan Peele. The film is about a black male named Chris, performed by Daniel Kaluuya, who is going out of town with his girlfriend Rose, performed by Allison Williams. The purpose of this trip is to meet her parents for the first time at their estate located deep into the woods. Little does Chris know Rose’s parents do not really care to meet him but are more interested in auctioning off his body. Chris figures this out towards the end of the film and he barley figures out a way to escape.
In the film Extreme Measures someone can find ideas of Secular Ethics throughout the film involving Utilitarianism and its basic tenets along with Kantian analysis. The basic tenets of Utilitarianism include the principle of utility, Hedonism, and the viewpoint of a disinterested and benevolent spectator. While the tenets of Kantian Ethics, which include good will, the formula of universal law, the formula of the end itself, and the categorical imperative. These basic ideas setup arguments for and against the Utilitarian ideas set up by doctor Myrick. In the film doctor Myrick makes the claim that it is worth the deaths of unwilling subjects in order to help/save the lives of millions.
