There are many elements to film that determine whether or not it is worth watching. Directors, actors, and studios gain credit and popularity, but that does not always mean they can produce a quality film. What makes a great film is the storyline, the emotions it gives the audience, and the attractive visuals. "The African Queen" is a brilliant film with it 's beautiful exotic visuals, talented actors, and suspenseful story. The film takes place mostly on a wild African River. For its time, the camera shots are absolutely beautiful. The African Queen boat built in 1912 combined with the Ruiki River created a glorious atmosphere for the story to take place. As long as the viewer is interested they will continue watching. "The African Queen" keeps the viewer 's attention every second of the film with its enticing storyline. Adapted from the novel The African Queen by C.S. Forester, the Library of Congress deems the film as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." From the beginning, the film draws the audience in with its intense opening. Rose, a lone survivor in a village from a German attack, is devastated at the loss of her partner in ministry, whom was also her brother, and the loss of the African community. When Charlie makes his next monthly rounds for mail, he finds her alone at the devastated village. He helps her bury her brother and invites her to aboard his steamboat. The relationship turns from hesitation, to irritable, and finally a friendship. They decide to turn the boat into a torpedo to take down a German gunboat. The couple faces turmoil down the river multiple times, including more German attacks, rapids, and bug infestations. Just when they feel defeated, they find their bond growing stronger. (Speigel and Huston 1951) This gives hope to the viewers, that the couple will go on. With the excitement of the new upcoming war, the various plagues of the river, and the unveiling love story, the viewer is left not wanting to miss a blink.
