Film Analysis: The Princess Bride

Set/Location
The Princess Bride was shot in several locations around Great Britain and Ireland. The portions of the movie that were shot in the castle and on castle grounds were actually shot in Penshurst Place. Penshurst Place set fits the plot and theme of the movie very well due to its medieval architecture and extensive grounds. The set also accommodated several intense scenes, such as the sword fighting scene, allowing for better camera angles and spacious scenes. Along with the fact that this set fits into the theme of the movie it also allows for a more authentic feel and a more natural look that matches the obvious idea that the movie was trying to push to the watchers.

Through the ideas of the producer, Dalton was able to portray his ideas for this film. An aspect to consider while watching this film is that there is no CGI, this being said, many of the fantasy beings may have needed costumes to bring them to life. An example of this is seen through the “rodent of unusual size”. This fantasy being was really a human in a costume. Dalton created a life like rat costume that could accommodate a person on the inside. The makeup aspect of this film was also well executed and this can be seen through the scars on Inigo Montoya’s face and even the cuts found on Westley after wrestling the giant rat in the Fire Swamp. The scars are realistic looking and you cannot see any lines from a mold and the same can be said about Westley’s wounds.
Historical Accuracy
Overall this film is historically accurate. Evidence of this can be found in Buttercup and Westley’s farm clothes and in the apparel worn in the scenes with the castle that show Prince Humperdinck is royal clothes. Another way this is shown is in the beginning of the movie while the grandson, a young Fred Savage is in bed playing a video game that was very popular during that time period so it was recognizable for many kids that age. Also the room of the grandson was accurate for the time period. It was filled and decorated with fads from that era.
