SKYLAR BLUE is skiing with JO BETH BLUE, her bold and daring older sister. Jo Beth is an Olympic skiing star and knows no fear, but Skylar worries that the weather conditions are ripe for an avalanche. Jo Beth barrels forward, unafraid, and though they make it to the bottom of the mountain safely, Skylar still believes there was reason to worry, that they could have caused an avalanche. Skylar idolizes her older sister and the two have an unusually close relationship. Jo Beth has been hurt by romance, so she wants Skylar to be self-sufficient. Jo Beth makes Skylar promise that she’ll never fall for guys like the dashing hero-types from the Bronte novels that Skylar adores. Skylar makes that promise, and she and Jo Beth stay content in each other’s company until their game of skiing “truth or dare” results in an accident. But they’re not one small, happy family; Skylar has read all of Jo Beth’s emails and she is convinced Mitch had a hand in Jo Beth’s death. Mitch is hiding something, but even he is unsure of what that is. He can’t tell if he’s causing strange events, like tidal waves and earthquakes, or if they’re a figment of his imagination. When a ghostly Jo Beth visits him, demanding that he take good care of Bijou and to stay away from Skylar, it’s hard for him to listen. Because although Mitch is a good father, he and Skylar are drawn to each other. When Magda shows up in Black Diamond, Skylar is incensed, but she still can’t shake her yearnings for Mitch. Despite all her doubts, Skylar falls in love with Mitch.
