As an athlete who loves sport it was not hard when it came down to making a decision about what movie to analyze for this assignment. As soon as I saw the title 42 and watched the trailer, showing a black baseball player trying to make the top American league I was stuck.
This film has a clear theme throughout which is the issue of race and racial discrimination, especially during the 19th century. The movie is based on a true story about a black baseball player named Jackie Robinson. Several scenes in the film show how white and black people in the US during this period of time are valued differently within society. Early in the movie, the protagonist, Jackie Robinson steps into the airport with his wife, Rachael Robinson. He catches his wife staring at the “white-women” restroom while she says that it is her first time experiencing such thing and starts walking towards the door. In a failed attempt to stop her from entering, Rachael steps into the restroom. While it looks like Jackie is the only one witnessing it, there is a woman working at the airport who spots it too. Once it is time for the couple to board the plane, they find out that they cannot get on. According to the flight attendant the flight is overbooked while in reality the couple is being replaced by another white couple. There are a few issues presented in this scene. First of all, the ”all-white-women” restroom, which clearly portrays a racial disparity between white and black women,
