The Corporation Review The Corporation, written by University of British Colombia Joel Bakan, is a stark realization of the power that has been given to corporations, and a critique of how that power has corrupted absolutely. The major themes that are addressed in the documentary are: corporate social responsibility, the notion of limited liability, and the idea of corporate personhood. These themes ultimately paint a picture of corporations have amassed power through U.S. court rulings. The documentary discusses how historically companies have not always been self-interested. Henry Ford who created his fortune through the creation of a cheap automobile at the turn of the 20th century, was sued by stockholder John Dodge because Ford had canceled the dividend he was paying to his stockholders. As well, Ford was lowering the prices of his vehicles in order to pass on the savings to his consumers. This theme is carried throughout the documentary, and helps build the case that modern corporations have become greedy, callous, and immoral beings that have a huge control on society. To change the realities that exist in regards to the modern corporation there needs to be the creation of intense government oversight. In order to change the way that corporations act there must be incentive for corporations to act morally. There could be stronger penalties for penalties that act without regards to the public interests.
