Throughout the novel the three of them rely on each other to strengthen their different skills. All of this lead up to the end when they had to face the hardest challenges created by different authority figures from Hogwarts. Because of their bond and improved gifts, they were able to not defeat Voldemort and stop him from stealing the sorcerer's stone. The three of them were faced with many challenges in the final chapters of the book. The faculty had many precautions in place to prevent anymore student tragedies and to keep the stone protected. The main challenge of entering the maze of obstacles was getting past an enormous three-headed dog. It took using all three of their strengths for the friends to proceed. The more the victim moved, the tighter the vines would wrap around them. Because of Hermione’s studies, she remembered that if they stayed still the plant would let them though. A couple of tasks later, they came to a task that only Ron could conquer. One that took both his inner and outer strength. The three of them faced a life size wizard’s chess game. Ron sacrificed himself, knowing that he could die, for them to win the game. “‘We’re nearly there,’ he muttered suddenly. ‘let me think- let me think…’The white queen turned her blank face toward him. ‘Yes…’ said Ron softly, ‘it’s the only way… I’ve got to be taken...You’ve got to make some sacrifices! I’ll make my move and she’ll take me -- that leaves you free to checkmate the king, Harry’”(Rowling 283). This showed strong Ron was was mentally and physically. After the chess game, Hermione and Harry went on and came to a room full of potions and a riddle. “Hermione let out a great sigh and Harry, amazed, saw that she was smiling, the very last thing he felt like doing. ‘Brilliant,’ said Hermione. ‘This isn’t magic -- it’s logic -- a puzzle”
