Although social media feels new to many people, it has been developing for many centuries. In the 1940’s the first supercomputers were created (Hendricks, 2013). Scientist and engineers began developing ways to create networks between the supercomputers and paving the way for the internet. In the 1960’s, CompuServe revealed the earliest forms of the internet and email was also developed (Hendricks, 2013). Because of networking technology improvements in the 70’s, UseNet allowed users to communicate through a virtual newsletter starting in 1979. Around this time in the 1980’s home computers became more common and social media were becoming more sophisticated with internet relay chats (Hendricks, 2013). Once blogging was created and social media exploded in the 2000’s and social media site like MySpace and LinkedIn gained popularity. However, it was sites such as Photobucket and Flickr that enhanced social media with photo sharing (Hendricks, 2013). Though it was YouTube that changed the way people shared and communicated long distance. Today, there are an extensive variety of different social media platforms for personal use, but also effective commercial use such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, and Instagram. Facebook encompasses all the social media developments from the start of the internet to the accomplishment of UseNet, Six Degrees profile developments, the invention of blogging, formulation of MySpace, Photobucket, and Flickr’s photo sharing, as well as, the enhancements of YouTube and more. Facebook began as a social network where people signed up to interact with friends and family. Today, Facebook is the largest and most popular social media platform (Larson & Draper,
