The movie industry is one of the biggest media businesses but yet the one that makes least amount of money due to the fact that movies are expensive to make while hard to predict success. If the movie is not a hit then the inventors will lose the money they put toward the production. The movie industry has come a long way from when it started to now in today’s society. Not only do movies make a huge impact in today’s world but they can also affect people’s lives. There were six people who came to the process to invent a device that photographs moving objects followed which was followed by a device to project those pictures. Warner Bros, who started in 1930, is now one of the biggest motion pictures today. In 2013, Warner Bros had record-breaking success across all businesses and the most successful theatrical year in company history because they had reached five billion dollars. MetriGoldwyn-Mayer (MGM) was the most successful studio in Hollywood with popular movies such as “The Great Ziegfeld,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Gone with the Wild.” In 2004 MGM had been sold for 4.8 billion dollars. The theater industry is poised to replace the traditional film projector, which was invented about 100 years ago. Now in today’s world, the internet allows independent and established moviemakers to distribute movies inexpensively by transferring them to the internet screening. In 2008, Apple iTunes had launched an online movie rental service which cost $2.99. This allowed costumers to have easier access to the movies they wanted to watch while on the go or in general, if they didn’t want to watch what was on the television or movie theater. In 2010, Netflix announced agreements with Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM for streaming services for new feature films. For just $8.99 per month, people could watch movies anytime they wanted. Now, with Hulu plus, you can also watch television shows. People wouldn’t have to pay a lot of money just to watch the same TV shows and movies on cable. Additionally, Netflix and Hulu Plus have less commercials for only $8.99 per month.
The exhibition for movies is to draw people to the movie theaters. DreamWorks began developing a new digital version of 3-D technology which they called “RealD.” This used a single projector to merge two screens that cost $75,000 per screen but they can charge twice as much for a RealD ticket as regular admission. The screen was available in selected theater in 2009. Disney released 3-D version of “Toy Story” and “Alice in Wonderland”
