Within the modern and high-tech society of today, much of the world relies on social media and digital platforms to progress itself towards further development in the inevitable age of tomorrow. However, much of what people reveal online about themselves is accessible and used by many different governments and corporations. This is one of the risks development and technology pose for many nations worldwide. Due to the amount of easily accessible knowledge online this risk is a cheap price to pay. In addition, the evermore present idea of the “shrinking globe”, gives way to an expanding horizon of communication between peoples and nations. It is the notion that as media expands, the world supposedly becomes smaller (Gasher, Skinner, & Lorimer, 2016: 6). Societies can connect via the internet within a matter of mere seconds. Governments can pass legislation throughout a large nation such as Canada, as well as communicate amongst one another and form unions similar to the United Nations. Similarly, friends can use social media to connect across the globe using platforms such as Blackberry Messenger and Facebook Messenger. As Marshall Mcluhan stated, communication technology can be considered an extension of a person’s body and nervous system (Brey, 2000). Accordingly, the globe has adopted technology as an extension of its communication resources. This shrinkage of space and time makes once lengthy and complex tasks become far quicker and simpler as well. In the comfort of their own homes, individuals can go online and blog, shop and sell goods and information. These tools allow people to have more fulfillment in their lives by allowing them more time to focus on multiple societal issues over short periods. With the increased usage of internet on more handheld mobile devices in the last half decade and the increase in social apps on these platforms such as Skype and WhatsApp, it is becoming far simpler to communicate even while travelling (Statistics Canada, 2013).
