Technology has allowed people to move their work out of the traditional workplace and into their homes, as well as on the go. On one hand doing what you love could possibly allow one to provide for themselves and a family or it could cause them to live a life of financial dismay; but you would still be doing what you enjoy, so is it worth it? In order to be successful and do what you love, you should pick something interesting and something that will be financially viable (464). Thinking about starting your own company? Then choose something that will leave you with the feeling of respect, autonomy, and impact (465).
“Don’t focus on the value your work offers you,” Newport says. “That’s the passion mindset. Instead focus on the value you produce through your work: how your actions are important, how you’re good at what you do, and how you’re connected to other people.” When you do, the passion will follow- and if you work hard enough, some day you’ll be so good they can’t ignore you.
