Purchasing modern technology in the hospital environment could have some challenges, as well as the challenges of not placing modern technology in a hospital environment. It would probably be better to start with the challenge of not having the modern equipment. Having outdated equipment could cost the company as well. The tests that are performed in the laboratory on equipment that is outdated may take longer to get the same results as a newer more modernized version. One would also be concerned with the quality of the tests and if an outside lab or another hospital, which is the competition, can out-perform our current hospital. Management-by-accounting approach would have to be taken to justify the upgrade by stating the facts that they must think on a larger scale than the upgrade would provide. An upgrade would contribute to the overall organizational excellence that would make the hospital more competitive (Davis & Goestch, 2014). Providing the upgrade will eventually have a big impact on the finances of the hospital. Then as a healthcare leader, you would have to make a convincing argument that the money the hospital has lost not being able to compete with other hospitals, is nothing compared to how much money they could stand to gain in the long run by being able to compete. “Hospitals that invest in upgrading the latest equipment or remodel or replace their aging facilities would then be able to recruit and retain more physicians, attract more patients, and compete with other healthcare providers”( McCue, 2011). As a healthcare leader, it is important to know that upgrading the lab equipment would have the better probability of producing high revenue (Davis & Goestch, 2014). If employees are involved in the decision-making process of the company getting the new equipment the perception would be a positive one. Employee involvement and empowerment, especially those employees working with the lab equipment itself, means the chance of the plan to purchase the new lab equipment to be a good one. The plan of how and when to purchase the equipment a better one and the process of quality improvement is a better probability because there are more people involved that work directly with the equipment and perform the lab tests. It also gives the employees ownership of the decision because they are the ones that have to work on the equipment (Davis & Goestch, 2014). The employees would be given a voice in the decision making that involves them by tailoring their work to allow them to voice their opinions on how they can improve their day to day operations, within specified guidelines (Davis & Goestch, 2014). If the equipment is not purchased, the employees may feel as if though they are not giving quality tests to the patients or may feel as though the tests are now not sufficient enough to help clearly give the proper diagnosis.
