Another successful aspect of the UN is its humanitarian agencies that fulfill its charter by providing for those in need “without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion” (Charter Of, n.d). With the many well-respected organizations that the UN has established, WHO and UNICEF are prime agencies that have drastically improved the conditions of people around the world. Since 1948, WHO has been a crucial organization in combating against diseases such as Smallpox, HIV/AIDS and malaria (Ryan, 2011). Since 90% of the people in Africa are infected by Malaria, UNICEF decided to distribute millions of mosquito nets, and treat these patients (Roberts, 2014). Since then, the number of people in Africa getting infected has severely decreased. In the past 13 years, the number has dropped from 173 million people to 128 million (Roberts, 2014). In the case of water sanitation, in La Horca, many young children had to attain water from a creek, but as UNICEF designed a water pump and filtration system, it now successfully provides clean water that connects directly to 35 houses in the community (UNICEF’s At Work, 2007). Additionally, in Afghanistan, UNICEF coordinated a learning program that educates 72,000 girls that missed education, and made 4.2 million children enroll in schools (UNICEF’s At Work, 2007).
