“ The more social media we have, the more we think we are connecting, yet we are really disconnected from each other.” The irony in this quote is compelling me to ask you a question—How many of you all can live without checking your snapchat,what’s app, and instagram for a day? By the number of hands raised, I can rightfully say that we are addicted to social media. Social media is changing the way we communicate and the way we are perceived, both positively and negatively. On my birthdays, no one calls me except for my grandmother. They all prefer texting me instead. Now my grandmother is getting used to social media, I’m afraid she might stop calling me on my birthday! There are 2.3 billion active social media users. This has led to a range of positive and negative impacts. To start with the positives, it is used to document memories, learn about, explore things, advertise for businesses, and form friendships. At the same time, social media use had led to depression, issues of cyber bullying, minimal use of library, online harassment, and violence online. This has affected people self-esteem and self -worth. Studies show that 53% of social media users had changed their behavior; 51% said it was negative behavior. 95% of teenagers who use social media have witnessed cyber bullying. Social media has affected the way people communicate. Abbreviations have been introduced to cut down on time. This tells us that everything has officially and permanently changed. There is a generation of kids coming up who can’t even conceive a world without smart phones and social networking. It has officially embedded itself in our culture. As with any communication medium, it comes with its ups and downs, pros and cons.
