In this paper, I’ am going to discuss my final project, my thought process behind choosing this theme and quotes and finally reflect on my thoughts on the class, Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies, as a whole.
For the final project, I decided to complete option two, WGS and the World: Mixing the Intertext. I decided to revolve my texts and PowerPoint, around sexual assault and domestic violence. In my PowerPoint I included many shocking statistics, facts, testimony and even some definitions, such as defining what intimate partner violence is, in order to show a well-rounded and informed view of sexual assault and domestic violence. There were so many new topics that I had learned about, such as intersectional feminism, feminist theory, privilege, post-colonial feminism and so much more. In addition to all this new knowledge, there were also topics that I somewhat understood but I lacked the confidence and, what I thought was, full understanding in order to be able to discuss these topics. Intro to Women’s and Gender Studies gave me the language in order to not only discuss these topics but to also have the confidence to feel like I know what I’m talking about. Intro to Women’s and Gender Studies also gave me a sense of community. It was nice as a first-year student who had just recently come to Hope College, almost calming, to come to class every day and be with people who are also excited and willing to discuss feminism, gender, disability and many more. Through this class, it felt as if I found people similar to me, though we may not have always agreed. I felt that I had made friends, great connections and was listened to. Through all these amazing discussions I also learned to embrace every part of myself, my gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, my intersectionality, and that every part of my history is important in how I view the world.
