In my research to find out the best terms to describe my citizen science project eOceans, I have determined through my sources that the best terms are participatory action science, Community-based Participatory Research, and crowdsourcing. These terms best describe the citizen science project eOceans. I will also explain my reasoning on why some terms do not fit my project.
Before I started this essay I wanted to do my argument paper on a scistarter project called eWhalestrandings. Unfortunately, the page for it was taken down and I felt like I could no longer write efficiently about that project. I decided to find another project that was similar to eWhalestranding. I came across eWhale, A very similar but more complicated and thorough version

Any term that involves the definition of a group effort or voluntary service could potentially be a candidate. eOceans is also primarily a data collection site, so any term dealing with that gets major points for being a good fit. One of those terms that would best fit this criterion would be crowdsourcing. Crowdsourcing at its core involves a large group of people, be it paid or voluntary, in some cases both, that involves leveraging the collective intelligence, expertise, and resources of a diverse group of individuals to solve a problem, complete a task, or achieve a common goal. Crowdsourcing can take many forms, including, but not limited to collecting and analyzing data, generating ideas or feedback, completing micro-tasks, and funding projects through crowdfunding platforms like eOceans. There are many pros to crowdsourcing, one of them being that there can be a deeper engagement with the community as they build trust and loyalty to the project at hand. eOceans does a good job at this, having a small but loyal community that is passionate about the subject of helping and understanding sea life better. eOceans works on the idea of a subset of crowdsourcing which is wisdom. This idea says that a larger group of people are collectively smarter than an expert on the subject. This is very true for eOceans as it mainly relies on amateurs the subject to observe and collect data by taking …show more content…
Participatory Action Research can be applied to a wide range of research topics and contexts, from health and education to social justice and environmental sustainability, which is exactly what eOceans main goal is. What sets PAR apart from traditional research methods is the active involvement of participants in all stages of the research process. This means that community members, stakeholders, and other relevant individuals are not simply passive subjects of research, but rather active partners in generating knowledge and taking action to address the issues at hand. eOceans only works if the participants of the project are actively engaging with the website and posting their pictures to help further marine research. Another important aspect of PAR is its emphasis on reflexivity and critical self-reflection. Researchers and participants are encouraged to critically examine their own assumptions, biases, and power dynamics, and to be open to learning from one another throughout the research process. This self-awareness and ongoing reflection can help to ensure that the research is conducted ethically and that the outcomes are relevant, meaningful, and actionable. Dr. Christine Piage talks about how she wants to have this research conducted ethically, ensuring the participants that the data she collects is not going to end up in the hands of poachers or illegal
