Most of us know the Disney Pixar movie Finding Dory, the sequel to Finding Nemo. Both generally well known children’s movies about a lost fish trying to find the way back home. What they don’t blatantly put out there for the viewer to see is that the story is referencing to a life with a disability. In Finding Nemo, Nemo is the last remaining son of Marlin, a nervous clown fish. Nemo has an undersized fin that they refer to as his “lucky fin”. The lucky fin causes him to be a poor swimmer. Later on down the line Nemo is introduced to another fin-impaired role model who helps build his confidence. Similarly, Finding Dory has a handicap character. They are trying to teach to her brain long-term memories, set things to remember and come back to if she where to get lost and to always stay away from the under tow. They were accepting of her instead of trying to fix her. Dory’s parents try to help her remember a little rhyme to help keep her safe from the undertow, “when we see the undertow, we say heck no!” Dory always forgets how it goes. In this clip Dory wonders “What if I forget you?” “Will you forget me?” A year after Nemo’s safe return home, he and his friends remain in school and on this day Mr. Ray takes them on a field trip to see the annual ray migration. Dory, tagging along as a classroom helper, gets herself sucked into the undertow of the rays, and begins to remember pieces of her childhood. It’s from there Dory takes off on a blind quest to search for her parents meeting new fish with several different impairments on the way. Destiny, a whale shark who Dory knew at a young age, has limited vision causing her to bump into the sides of her tank often. Bailey, a beluga whale, who has a head injury causing interference with his echolocation. And Hank, an octopus, or a septopus, because he is missing a tentacle. There are limitations but Dory manages to see beyond that and sees the talents. Together they find ways past their disabilities to lead Dory to her
