Scholar, Sara Parcak, in a Ted Talk video, “Archeology from space,” recounts her childhood memories of searching for sand dollars on the beach and how it grew into her love for archeology. Then, she goes on to explain how her naked eye was not enough to research the grand ancient cities that were once along the Nile River, which led to the use satellite imagery. Sara Parcak used one of the eight ways of knowing while conducting her research on finding the ancient egyptian city of Itjtawy: reason. First, to understand reason its definition must be known. Parcak did not decide to go to Egypt and search the 800 miles of land on foot, instead she went with a more efficient method; the satellite imagery. By Sara Parcak choosing to use satellite image she used reason. She knew that time would be wasted searching so much land on foot when a satellite image would let them know exactly where to look. The use of reason by Parcak helped her make the logical judgement of how to proceed with her research and how to perform it. Another example of reason in the video is when Parcak is describing where the location of the ancient city used to be. She explains that the city used to be located somewhere near the location of the pyramids of the two kings who built it and also near the Nile River. Then she goes on to say that over time the Nile River changed shifting over to the east and eventually covered the city. Reason was used here in Parcak’s decision on where to look. She knew the general area of where the city might be, but one the markers that helped identify its location moved.
