Background Information
According to the Central Intelligence Agency, Finland at first was a province and then under a dukedom under Sweden from the 12th to the 19th centuries Finland gained an autonomous (a country or government that has a self-ruling government). Finland gained complete independence in 1917. In World War II, Finland had successfully gained and defended its independence through cooperation with Germany and resisted after the invasions of the Soviet Union.although they had soe losses of their territory, In half of the century Finland transformed from the farm/forest community to an idustrilaized modern economy. It borders the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothina, and the Gulf of Finland. Finland is in between Sweden and Russia. Its total area is 338,145 sq km. 303,815 sq km is land and 34,330 sq km is water. Space wise it is slightly more than two times the size of Georgia and slightly smaller than Montana. Finland has three border countries which are Norway, Sweden, and Russia. Finland has a cold temperate climate. It is potentially subartic but is comparatively mild because of moderating influence of the North Atlantic Current and Baltic Sea, and more than 60,000 lakes. The lowest point of elevation in Finland is 0 m which is the Baltic Sea. The highest pooint in elevation is Halti (which is also known as Haltia, Haltitunturi, and Haltiatunturi) which is at 1,328 m. Natural resources that Finland has include, timber, iron ore, copper, lead, zinc, chromite, nickel, gold, silver, limestone. Finland has a coastline of 1,250 km. 7.5% of their land is used and is agricultural land. 72.9% of their land is forest. Lastly there is 19.6% of land that is untouched. Finland has 685.8 sq km (2010). There are 110 cu km (2011) of total renewable water resources. They have very low terrain. They have flat to rolling plains that are intersperced with lakes and low hills. Current issues theyhave with their environment include the air pollution frrom manufacturing and power plants contributing to acid rain.
