Finny's Forgiveness In The Crucible

I do not believe that Finny should forgive Gene. I believe this because Gene admitted to purposefully making Finny fall, Gene ruined the trust between them, and because Finny’s injury will last forever. On page 62, Gene tells Finny that he “deliberately jounced the limb so you would fall off.” A direct confession from someone of purposefully causing you harm is very hard to forgive. A counterargument to this could be that perhaps it was an accident. However, throughout the entirety of Chapter 4, Gene is angry at Finny, and that anger came out of him while they were in the tree. Gene’s confession also puts this argument to rest. Further more, as a result of this confession, Gene ruined the trust he had with Finny. When Finny suggested that they jump off of the tree together, he showed the complete trust he had in Gene, believing wholeheartedly that the other wouldn’t do anything to make him fall. …show more content…

Later, on page 62 when Gene confesses, he realizes that his admission is injuring Finny worse by making him realize he’s been betrayed by Gene, and that he can no longer trust the boy he calls his best friend. Lastly, I believe that Gene shouldn’t be forgiven because the injury he gave Finny will last the rest of Finny’s life. Finny most likely wanted to join the war, since he originally jumped from the tree as practice for battle, but he’ll never be accepted into the army now with this leg the way it is. On page 109, Finny confesses that he wanted to participate in the Olympics. Now he‘ll never even be able to run again. Finny was also an excellent athlete and won a lot of awards, but on page 55 the doctor says that sports are finished for
