What is love? By definition love is 'a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person ' however is that genuinely the only side to love? No it is not, love comes in many different forms and it is not only sunflowers and daisies, there can be a dark side of love. "Darkness and love have at least one thing in common; they are both surrounded by shadows, pain and suffering." Love is not all about romance; it’s a mystery waiting to be unfolded. Love is misery, it's bittersweet and forbidden. The poem tells the story of how the speaker unexpectedly falls in love with a woman who remains unnamed throughout the poem but through research her name is rumored to be Mary. ("Analysis of First Love" ) The poem starts off by speaker stating that he was "I ne'er stuck before that hour" indicating that he never was so suddenly struck with such a powerful feeling of love before he set eyes on this woman who merely took his breath away. He continues staring at this woman who struck him "with a love so sudden and so sweet " emphasizing that the love that hit him so unpredictably left him bewildered with an overwhelming sensation of love."And stole my heart away complete" the speakers uses 'my heart' as a symbol of his love that she has unknowingly stole. The poem continues to describe how his "face turned pale, a deadly pale" probably at the realization that this love could not be returned as the speaker continued to say "when she looked what could I ail' which signifies the deep emotional pain that he feels when he finds out that she will not love him back. It starts off describing the exuberating pain of watching the one you love with someone else. "Your heart is being brutally yanked out and shredded into a million tiny pieces" describes the extremity of the torture one undergoes when the person they love gets together with someone else. The love one receives from them is merely a brotherly sisterly kind of love and nothing hurts more than being trapped in the friend zone. "When you spot them together, and they appear to be on cloud nine, it's almost bittersweet because you want nothing more than happiness for them but simultaneously you want to be the reason behind their joyful smile" (line 8) the speaker conveys how painful it is to see whom they wish were theirs happy with someone else. The speaker goes on to say to portray how brutal it is to watch the one you love so much , be in love with someone else and you can do nothing more than pretend you're happy for them and that you are perfectly alright. The speaker concludes by saying that one cannot just simply cry and sulk over this painful situation but you must endure the suffering and push past it to aim to your happiness and well being. The meaning constructed throughout the piece most certainly supports the theme in every aspect since it describes how watching the one you love someone
