In the novel, the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Christopher tries to solve the mystery of the dead dog. Christopher, who has asperger 's syndrome, is pushed to his limits while uncovering deep family secrets. Throughout this book, the author, Mark Haddon, uses the first person narrative through the eyes of Christopher to explain the world in his eyes. A first person narrator is helpful for showing how a character develops, increasing the believability of the story, and connecting the readers to the main character
Mark Haddon chose to write with first person to show Christopher’s thoughts and ideas to the readers. Since Christopher has asperger 's, his mind is always thinking about different situations and past experiences. With a first person narrative, the audience is able to understand why he does the things that he does. For example, Christopher groans in order to block out the noise so that he can think. If someone were to not know this, they might become worried for or even weirded out by him. First person narrative can also be tricky to work with when dealing with other characters and situations. When dealing with just one character 's emotions and opinions, other characters can get left out with little explanation. In fact, everything the main character says might have a biased opinion that is hard to pick out. This can create misconceptions about the other characters. When dealing with intense situations between the characters, a reader will only get to hear one side of the story. For instance, in the novel Christopher thinks that his mother is dead. However, she is actually alive and Christopher’s father has been lying to him this whole time. Perhaps if the book had not been written in first person, the readers could have been given insight into why the dad lied instead of telling the
