The one thing that any author must do when writing any sort of essay is to make it comprehensible to the reader. In order to achieve this, the author must utilize anything to get their point across or else the writing would be futile. In Turkeys in the Kitchen , Dave Barry gives his own personal stories about his Thanksgiving and how he feels that men aren’t as useful as women in the terms of the culinary arts (kitchen), Barry’s flippant tone and his use of rhetorical devices such as similes and irony bring forth a light hearted explanation of stereotypes between men and women as well as describing how men are useless in the kitchen. Also, it’s obvious Amy was self-conscious about the Chinese style of cooking and in this sentence she’s self-conscious because she says, “For Christmas I prayed for this blond-haired boy, and a slim new American nose”(1). At the first glance the article is about a woman who reminisces about her childhood though the love of Twinkies, she is now grown and understands the truth about Twinkies and how unhealthy they are but still longs for the “snack cake” as her guilty pleasure. The meaning of the Twinkie changes and evolves though out the article and can be interpreted to represent multiple things. While labor issues were a factor in Hostesses bankruptcy, some of the blame can be placed on the migration of people leaning towards heathier options of food. Nguyen encapsulate this concept into a metaphor for the expansion of tolerance and open mindedness in the US now creating a heathier society. As Hang travels to Moscow by train she recounts her life experiences and contemplates on her past during the corrupt communist reign. The novel describes events through Hang’s perspective and illustrates her childhood memories using various motifs. Particularly, food is used as the most recurring and notable motif.
My first character is Tita, the main character. She was the daughter of Mama Elena and a mulato man. Thought the movie Tita is being raised and nurtured by Necha, the house cook who happens to be a native indian or mulato woman. Since Tita spent most of her life by Necha’s side instead of her mother, she learned the customs of Nechas culture. Tita learned how to cook with native spices and how to use plants for healing, like the tree bark she used on Roberto’s back when he got burned.
Madeleine Thien’s “Simple Recipes” is not mainly about the father cooking food and his treatment towards his son, instead, the author uses food to symbolize the struggles her immigrated family experienced in Canada. While it is possible to only look at the narratives that food symbolizes, the idea is fully expressed when the father is compared with the food. The theme of food and the recipes are able to convey the overall troubles the narrator’s family encountered. Although, food is usually a fulfilling necessity in life, however, Thien uses food to illustrate the struggle, tensions, and downfall of the family. Amy Tan uses imagery in the short story “Fish Cheeks” in order to let the reader feel the way Amy felt at the table on Christmas Eve. For example, in the story it states, “ My relatives licked the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table dipping them into the dozen or so plates of food.” This explains that Amy felt embarrassed that her family wasn’t realizing the fact that they had no manners at the table. Amy was completely embarrassed with the fact that, that was the way her family had acted while they ate. Fish Cheeks, by Amy Tan is a story of love, culture, being different, and accepting one's differences. A young Amy falls in love with the son of a white minister and is shocked when she finds out that her mother invited the ministers family over for christmas dinner. Amy is very embarrassed because of her asian heritage, and some of the asian customs her family embraces. She explains that her mother went out of her way to prepare many traditional asian dishes that most people would find quite odd. When Christmas eve came around, she explained what her mother was preparing and used imagery to paint a picture in the reader's mind as if they were there.
Lily Wong, in her article about food, entitled “Eating the Hyphen,” states, “Perhaps this combination (ketchup and dumplings) has something to do with the fact that since both my parents grew up in the States, we’ve embraced many American traditions while abandoning or significantly modifying many Chinese ones” (95).
