Discussing Race In Jay Smooth’s TEDx talk he talks about how to make race an easier topic to discuss. If we can take the mindset that we are either racist or not racist and begin to realize that non-racist people can think and say racist things, race might be able to become a less touchy subject to discuss. Growing up as a full white male, I haven’t faced much discrimination.
The individuals in this world are foolish to intuit hate for each other, for one way or another, we are all connected. The reason for this connectivity is the fault of passing or racial ambiguity. Passing is where an individual from one race is accepted into another based off of their appearance. Examples from: the film titled Little White Lie, a guest speaker named Rebecca Campbell, and the novel by J. California Cooper titled Family, explain this notion of passing and how it caused the world to be so connected.
It is also said that having an understanding of race and slavery, does not stop racial oppression.
In chapter one, "Privilege, Oppression, and Difference, Allan Johnson begins his argument that "difference is not the problem"( Johnson, pg 5 ). The author goes on to explain that difference by itself is not the problem, rather difference in conjunction with our ideas that cause fear. That being said, discrimination was a bigger problem in the past and it still is today. We starts with talking about Rodney King and racism he had received from police officers in Los Angeles. Johnson continues on with the idea that people are judged not for who they are or the things they have accomplished, but how they are perceived by others.
Maya Angelou once said, “Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future and renders the present inaccessible.” She meant that when prejudice was a major issue in the past it can still threaten our future and leaves the present to the new generations. Leaves the prejudice, racism and current issue to us, lets us do the changing in the world. During the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s people have been prejudice and have been changing the way the world was at the time. While doing this, racism was forming and more current issues started.
The effect of this line was that it must have motivated many black people to end segregation because who would want their children to live a life full of heartbreak and
Race is a divisive factor in many populations. It is a concept to categorize people based on their physical traits, such as skin color, and genetics. Race can be used as a mechanism for social division. As the novel unfolds, Huckleberry Finn’s perspective on race changes as he sees the importance for equality in Mark Twain’s, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
“I don’t know, but they did it. They’ve done it before and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it—seems that only children weep.” (Lee 243) Society is the way it is and you can’t change it. And sometimes it looks like only people who care to try and change it are the ones who don’t know that. Racial injustice will always exist in some capacity, someone will always think that they’re better than someone else for some stupid reason and the only people who treat people truly equal are children and people who are smart enough to look past their own ignorance and see deeper than a person's skin color.
(Griffin 8). After acknowledging more about the circumstances of being a different skin color, comments about it can not “describe the withering horror and sadness” that is felt by those who experience such cold and spiteful words or actions (Griffin 46). If we do not make these changes together as a nation, our society will become ruined as those with
It seems as though race is not a substantial issue in the world today like it used to be. Everyone has a different background from where they come from and an ethnicity. Chicanos, Hispanics, Latinos, Mexican Americans whatever you wanna call them. They 're just people, right? Around the 1960s, many individuals in this group were faced with difficult issues throughout their lives.
Lastly, an individual should overcome discrimination to achieve one’s goal. In conclusion, bigotry are hurdles that an individual
This is very applicable towards race relations between Black people and White people. But often at times, Hispanics, Asians, Middle Eastern/Arab people and even Native Americans have been left out of the conversation of racial politics and the debate around it. ” They act like I’m the official representative of the black race and they owe me an explanation... If I sit out a protest, I’m making a statement, but if they sit out a protest, they look racist.” This quote that has been stated alludes to a few concepts.
Race is an issue. Our culture tries to pretend that it’s not, but our minds can’t help but compare the people with the stereotypes. It’s easy to identify yourself based on your race, but it’s even easier to pre-judge others. Our race has nothing to do with potential, with success or with what a person is capable of. What can we do to fix this injustice is to raise awareness and give people knowledge that we shouldn 't judge people based on their race.

Racism is an ever growing issue in the world, and something we can’t hide behind. According to dictionary.com the defintion of racism is: “the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.” Race was created socially by how people perceive ideas and faces people are not used to yet. It is the “hatred” of one person to another individual, solely based on that person's belief that the person is inferior because of their language, birthplace and skin colour. Racism is an issue that has lasted throughout history, providing justification for a group’s dominance over another.
