Figueroa’s Framework is a tool which allows us to investigate access, equity and equality in sport and physical activity. There are five Levels of the Figueroa’s Framework. These levels are individual, interpersonal, institutional, structural and cultural. These levels revolve in physical activity as one. The first level, individual is about all the person’s personal values, attitude and personality, genetic DNA but also their participation, access and equity. All these levels impact physical activity in varying degrees. This level isn’t just relevant to the person’s internal influences but also the external influences such as peer pressure and judgement. This level is about the surrounding community, schools, facilities, rules and religion. Your school, community and facilities all work together to support the individual sportsman. This creates easier opportunities in regards to sport and physical education. The structural level examines the inequities within our society on a larger scale. It evaluates the impact of social status depending on the types and different levels of participation in sport and physical activity. Power and relationships create an impact within society while also influencing the distribution of sporting resources such as rewards and sponsorships. The cultural level is the fifth level of the Figueroa’s framework. This level is about the history, identity, socialisation, ethnic backgrounds and gender positions. This essay will evaluate the role of the media in the development of Volleyball as a marketable commodity. It will identify gender discrimination and how this influences participation in Volleyball.
