The Declaration of Independence is a very important legal document that gave the American Colonies in 1776, their independence from King George III and the British Empire. It also represented and laid down the ideological foundations for what was to be a democratic government of the United States, as it provides a blueprint and foundation behind just and fair government, by stating that the government is to exist to serve its people, while also stating that the government is to be elected by the people themselves to express their will.
