Throughout the book Brother by David Chariandy, the main character of the book Michael goes through many flashbacks to help develop the story more although some are more important than others. All of flashbacks 3 are in my opinion critical for the story of Brother. The 3 most important flashbacks in the story are Francis and Michael going behind the apartments to speak, him and his entire family in the living room dancing, and when Michael and Francis went to the secret area in the park under a bridge.

Once Michael understands what Francis is saying, he starts to protest the idea of him not being at home helping him support their mother. Although this is important to the story what happens after is in my opinion why this is so important in the book. After Francis and Michael stop arguing about if Francis will move out and suddenly hear someone yell at the, from the apartment saying the police are on their way. As he says this Francis and Michael start running home. As both of them run from the police coming Francis stops which also makes Michael stop and then he realizes that Anton was shot and killed because of the recent events. Michael tells Francis that have to leave immediately and Francis listens after a bit of time. After they start running back home again the police catch up to them and catch them, Michael is being held down violently causing pain to Michael so Francis tries to help him but the police do the same to him and even threatened to shoot him.
