During the 1950s and 60s, many young teens started to rebel in various ways to break free from the ‘Ozzie and Harriet fantasy’ their parents and generations before them have experienced. This was displayed through the themes of various rock and roll songs. A specific theme described in many songs at that time was the defiance of stereotypical gender roles. Despite being common back then, this theme and many others at that time are still evident in modern music today. A prime example of the defiance of stereotypical gender roles in modern day music is Lady Gaga.

Music all over the world has been shaping generations for many years now. The rock n roll of the 70’s and 80’s, pop and hip-hop of the 90’s and early 2000’s and finally, many different popular genres of the generation we now live in. Music provides a means of expression for all types of individuals. Some music even goes against the social norm and tries to bring attention to social injustices. The song “Crooked Smile” by rapper J. Cole tackles the issue of unrealistic expectations of women with the songs exceptional lyrics, broad metaphors, and positive tone.
In her essay “hip hop’s betrayal of black women,” Jennifer McLune implies that “(h)ip-hop owes its success to the ideology of women-hating” (193). She does not agree with Kevin Powell’s article that hip-hop does not mean to “offend” black women, but instead artists are only letting out their temper throughout their music. McLune feels infuriated that many artists in hip hop (including black men) rap about their community and downgrade their own women. In the hip-hop genre, sexism is mainly used, not only by black men but also by many other race hip-hop artists. Artists assume that women-hating in their rap songs will be accepted by women, but do not realize that it is affecting all women.

Strong Born in San Francisco, Jana Harris is the author of “Don’t Cheapen Yourself”, a poem empowering woman. This poem was created at a time when women were fighting for equal rights. In the poem the subject, who appears to be a young woman, is confronted by her mother who calls her “sleazy” (line1). This would suggest her mother does not agree with the selections of clothing of her daughter, since she is accustomed to more conservative ways for a woman to dress and present herself in public.
Although critics claim that Beyonce’s album portrays the black woman as the ‘victim,’ Lemonade instead empowers black women to freely express themselves and their ‘anger’ because there is no greater oppression than suffering in silence. Truly, Bell Hooks’ claim that “much of the album stays within a conventional stereotypical framework, where the black woman is always a victim,” is false and insensitive. As an artist, Beyonce crafts music that resonates with women, especially black women, who have suffered pain due to patriarchal ideals that infiltrate the household as well. The

Mainstream hip hop culture is also filled with misogyny and negative images of women. These artists are unaware that sexism has been forced onto them through the brainwashing from the media, which is controlled by a patriarchal society. Conversely, feminism is the belief that both genders should have equal power.
This song in particular is degrading to women, sending a negative message to them, possibly deeply impacting their views toward consent and their value as human beings. I believe that music does have the power to shape the perception of reality and society for individuals, as music is a form of art that expresses deep emotion. The emotion and catchy tunes behind music causes people to be moved by it, with people often getting very into what they listen to. Moreover, views repeatedly being expressed in different songs will cause people to begin to believe that what they are hearing is true, shaping their

This song is widely covered by professional artists and cover singers up to today. When two identical lyrics are sung by two different singers, these are not identical lyrics anymore.
The song that I chose was “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. It was released in 2004, and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. It also hit number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Natasha Bedingfield has another popular song “Pocketful of Sunshine” and was really only popular in 2004-2006. You can find her songs on multiple 00’s playlists.
The song Hero by Mariah Carey is perfect to send a message about the Native American story, Saynday. In the song, she explains how everyone has a hero inside of them. In the story the animals are lost; they don’t know what to do without light. They are tired of living in the dark, but don 't know how to change this. Then, Saynday comes along and they all realize they have to do something in order to get light.
