The Flint water crisis has been a well known life-threatening issue for nearly three years, and yet has still not been solved. The problem began in April, 2014, when the city of Flint, Michigan switched their water supply to the Flint River in order to save money. Almost immediately after the switch of water source, residents complained about the quality of water, while city and state officials denied the possibility of an issue for months. As time went by, the supply pipes had corroded and lead began making its way into the water supply, potentially endangering the Flint population, as high blood lead levels are especially harmful to children and pregnant women, and can cause “learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and mental retardation,”
With the rural population numbering more than urban, some may think that Appalachia’s residents are isolationists. This is not the case. In reality, it is the land that is isolated, not the people. There is a distinct difference between the two. Also, slave violence was an issue in any territory where it was legal to own slaves.
Governor Rick Snyder caused one of the biggest disasters in Michigan. The flint water crisis. Governor Snyder switched the Flint water system which was connected to the Detroit water system to the Flint River. And right away people started noticing severe changes to their water. This was caused from the water pipes corroding and lead leaking into the water.
Both the state and federal governments have just declared a state of emergency for Flint, Michigan, yet (“even though” instead of “yet”?) the people of Flint have been without clean drinking water since 2014. After switching the city’s drinking water supply from Detroit’s water to the Flint river, lead infected the water that Flint’s residents rely on due to aging water pipes and polluted river water. This water crisis has not received the attention it requires. In order to solve this problem, it is important to understand how this problem started, how people are impacted day to day, and the long term consequences of this crisis.
Flint Water Crisis: I am interested in this topic because it has been in the news a lot in the past few years and I am curious as to why it has taken so long to be fixed because it still is not safe to this day. People have not had access to safe drinking water since 2014, and people should have indefinite access to safe drinking water. I would like learn more about what has been done by the government to help and why it has taken so long. This water crisis mainly violates is Article 25, which gives all people the right to an adequate standard of living, so that they can live a healthy life.

Why should people be concerned about the Flint Water Crisis? What makes it different from any other crisis? The citizens of Flint have been poisoned by drinking lead-filled water. This occurred because governor Rick Snyder switched Flint’s main water source from Detroit, to the Flint River in 2014 to save money. Due to this change in the water source, many children may not experience major health defects and have problems in the near future.
It was empowering to be an inspiration to the juniors, and to finally win a banner for the school during my last indoor soccer season. Overall, I am glad I dedicated my time because it reinforced the importance of discipline, and confidence in myself. Perhaps the most meaningful way I made an impact in the school was through the clubs at Brebeuf College. BCSA and the student council are two clubs I am most proud to be a part of because they foster connections between students in my community. As a founder of BCSA, I have devoted countless lunches and hours of time to ensure events were organized, games ran smoothly, and the club's mission was achieved.
The Flint Water Crisis is often described as one of the greatest environmental injustices of all time. The crisis began on March 2013 when the city city switched its water source to Flint River. However, due to inadequate water treatment, more than 100,000 residents were exposed to dangerously high levels of lead in the drinking water and a federal state of emergency was declared. The crisis has sparked debate on where to place the blame. A number of civilians, intellectuals, and politicians have agreed that the Flint Water Crisis is a result of the failure of the government on all levels.
I was deepening my knowledge of human anatomy and how diseases are spread to allow us to succeed at state. I also helped kids on the middle school team. I led experiments for them and helped them study so that they too could have a deeper understanding and broaden their knowledge. This focus will only grow stronger while attending Oklahoma Baptist University. I have applied to the Honors Program; the course work and topics in this program will strengthen my desire to learn.
Throughout this past week, thanks to Alabama Action, I have discovered the true meaning of a “servant’s heart” and discovered that when like-minded people get together, we can make a huge impact on the community. Servitude is something that is incredibly close to my heart and this week was the perfect introduction to all that the UA Honors College has to offer to help find ways to leave my mark. Coming into this week, we were just a large group of kids from every corner of the country – joined only by our desire to serve and our love for the University of Alabama. But, in just a few short days, we became a community of thinkers, leaders, and dreamers who formed bonds that will last throughout these next few years and beyond.
For hundreds and thousands of years, access to water has been an easy thought. It has become something that we don’t have to think twice about. As many of us know, water is a renewable source because of the water cycle. Canada has an abundant amount of water resources, with almost 20% of the world’s fresh water in our lakes, though approximately 12% is inaccessible. However, not everyone can obtain water that is clean enough for simple day to day activities such as cleaning, bathing, and drinking.

With regards to the predator of fresh water shortage in global scale, Canada also unfortunately falls to its prey. Blessed with abundant fresh water in lakes, streams, rivers and most importantly –the underground water, Canada has long taken it for granted that fresh water supply will never be their concern. However, the approaching of fresh water shortage has only until recently woken Canadians from their dreams.
