Florence Griffith Joyner On the day of December 21, 1959, Florence Delorez Griffith was born in Los Angeles, California. Later on she would come to be known as “Flo Jo.” Flo Jo and her family grew up in housing projects. She is known for her amazing track and field career and world record titles. She broke down barriers in the sporting industry. Flo Jo has become one of the top female athletes of all time. Flo Jo has left a mark in the history of the sport track and field and in the lives of many. Flo Jo was born on December 21, 1959. At a very young age Flo Jo talent for running was apparent. Competing in local races, Flo Jo began a love for the sport of running more and more. Her speed got her into many national youth games in which she would compete. At the age of 14 she ran at the Jesse Owens Youth Games and won. She ran track and field through her youth years. She attended Jordan High School in Los Angeles California. At this school she was part of the track and field team. She ran relays and served as the anchor (the fastest runner on a relay team). She would later go on and run at college level. Flo Jo also took part in the 1600 meter relay the US came out in second and later would compete in the 400 meters relay were she anchor for her US and placed in first. The win would give Flo JO her third Gold medal at the Olympics Games. Flo Jo would later that year step out of track and retire at the age of 29. This made people questioned why she was stepping down at the most successful time in her carrier and if drugs had anything to do with it.
