Does The 2008 Flood still affect us to this day? Nearly 8 years and 4 months since the flood in Mason City, people are still working on getting the houses moved or destroyed since then people have gotten new homes. Many houses in Mason City, Iowa were left waiting to get moved or destroyed. The whole process is a little sad, said Kavaya. “I’ve lived in my house for more than 40 years, so I hate to leave it. And yet I know I have to move.” Some people that can 't afford to move had to move. People are going into the empty houses and doing bad things. Thefts have been a problem. The flooding was in the Upper Iowa River, the Turkey, and the Maquoketa Rivers; outside of the Driftless Area, of the Wapsipinicon River and that of the Iowa River, and the Cedar River and the Skunk River. The Des Moines River had some minor flooding, but floodwalls and levees for the most part held fast. The Upper Mississippi River, which receives the outflow from all these rivers remained at flood stage. This is one of the biggest floods in Mason City Iowa. Several blocks were under water. Since the flood was very bad people were preparing for the flood. Some people were walking through the water to get their valuables. Because some people could not afford moving trucks to move their valuables. The flood even made it to Des Moines River which had some minor flooding. I think that Mason City is still getting affected by the flood because many houses had to be abandoned. Also people are still moving houses to another area to this day. Most of those people didn 't want to move out. Some people lived there for 20 - 40 years and some of them growed up in that house. A couple of people that couldn 't afford another house.
