The book I read this summer is Flora & Ulysses by: Kate DiCamillo. The main character of this book is Flora. She has glasses, short black hair and she is ten years old. Flora is a cynic. She has an opinion about everything. She hates romance and loves comics. I know this because her mother, Phyllis Buckman, writes stories about romance on her typewriter all day. Flora thinks it’s silly and dumb. (Flora’s favorite comic is The Illuminated Adventures of the Amazing Incandesto! She likes to watch Ulysses (a squirrel) type. She is a good friend to him. In fact she rescued him from a vacuum. Flora also likes to talk to a kid next door named William Spiver. They are good friends and have a lot in common, such as the feeling that their mothers don’t love them, and their fathers are not that present in their lives. …show more content…
Although a home town name was not mentioned, I can assume that this story takes place present day in a small rural town in America. I can tell there are woods around as when Tootie’s car broke down and they had to walk through them to find her mother and save Ulysses. The season seems to be summer since Flora is not in school and she mentions “summer days” in the story. Some parts of the story take place in Flora’s house, which was once shared with her father, Mr. Buckman. Also, there are other times when the story is set in Blixen Arms, the apartment in which Mr. Meescham lives, as well as her father. There were occasions when Flora went to breakfast with her father at a small restaurant called The Giant
