One of the famous mathematicians of all time is the remarkable Florence Nightingale which is also recognized as ‘The Lady with The Lamp’. She was born at Florence Italy on 12th of May 1820 and was named after the city of her birth. However, she died at the age of 90 on the date of August 13th, 1910 and buried at St. Margaret Church. The award was created for Florence which she is best known as a Crimean War famous nurse and was given by the Victoria Queen herself. In 1902, King Edward VII had created a military award and the famous mathematician became the first women received the Order of Merit award five years later (Answers). Other than that, Florence Nightingale was also the first woman whom was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in the year 1908. Before she became a nurse, she spent time teaching student’s geometry, algebra and arithmetic(Lipsey). She had become a pioneer that uses statistical graphics and also visual presentation in real life to find the reason and ways to improve the conditions of the hospitals. One of the Mathematic method she use is pie chart which later developed as a polar area diagram. By using polar area diagram or can be called as Nightingale rose diagram, Florence managed to show the seasonal sources of patient deaths in the hospital military field. This really help to reduce the number of deaths and improving the hygiene in the hospital(Wikipedia). Her most known polar diagram is called ‘Causes of Mortality in the Army in the East, From April1854 to March 1855’. The diagram illustrates the soldier’s death from wounds in the battle field, disease or other causes in that year (Magnello). In short, Florence Nightingale is a remarkable mathematician because she successfully changed nursing to a whole different level which saves many people lives and become one of the most respected careers by the nation
