Everyone, smart or not, always wants to be smarter. In the story “Flowers For Algernon” by Daniel Keyes, this dream became a reality for a man named Charlie. The protagonist Charlie Gordon, was given a procedure that triple his intelligence from an insufficient sixty-eight, to a staggering 204. This came at a horrible cost though, because soon after reaching an IQ of 204, he found out that he would die because of it. Nonetheless, I still believe that Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur were right to give the procedure to Charlie. With an IQ of sixty-eight, Charlie never could become smart like he wanted to. He even stated in his first progress report, “I want to be smart” March 5. After the procedure, he was finally able to accomplish his dream of becoming smart. Even though now, Charlie still doesn’t fit in, he is still much happier than he was before. This means that he is now able to experience the world in a whole better way now. On the contrary though, he felt lonelier than ever.
