Fly Away Home Theme Essay
Not everyone is wealthy and thankful for what they have. Some people don’t understand that they have it way better than others. This is shown really well in the story “Fly Away Home” by Eve Bunting, the protagonist, Andrew, and his dad are poor and live in an airport, but he is always positive even when things don’t go his way. You can tell that Andrew would like to have a better life, but doesn’t make it obvious by complaining. At the beginning of the story Andrew and his dad had a really hard, tough life. Then later in the story his dad and him slowly start moving towards the idea of moving out of the airport. You can tell by how he tries to save up money and use it wisely. He has to work for his money, even though he doesn’t get much. One way he does this is by returning luggage carts to the front desk to get 50 cents. You may think that's not much but so little money can mean a lot to people that don’t have much. Another way Andrew gets money is by carrying in people's luggage and getting paid. This connects back to my idea that he is still very positive even when things don't go his way. By the end of the story I think andrew notices that the bird that he met is a sign and relates a bunch to his own life. The birds life connects by when the bird gets stuck in the airport just like andrew and his dad and is working very hard to get out of the airport even when it hurts. Then later in the story the bird gets out and Andrew uses this bird as inspiration and believes he will get out of the airport just like the bird. The important thing about this is andrew is still so positive about leaving when he probably knows it will take some time and won't happen right away. In the story “Fly Away Home” you can really see Andrew be so very positive. He teaches us that looking on the bright side of things will make bad things not seem so bad. Everyone can learn from Andrew because you can still be positive at the worst times. Learning to be happy and positive is very important to
