Throughout many novels the focus is upon the marriage of a couple but also a secondary couple that acts as a foil to them. In Jane Austen's novel, Pride and Prejudice, there are several couples formed. Mr. Wickham and Lydia act as foils to the main characters Mr.Darcy and Elizabeth, and illuminates their positive and negative qualities throughout the novel.

Throughout the novel, Elizabeth shows maturity and quick thinking that turns out to be best compared to Lydia's rash thinking and lack of foresight. Comparing the events leading up to each marriage, it shows that Lydia's marriage was full of problems and caused great stress upon other family members.
