For spring break of my sophomore year, I joined a whole medical team of doctors to the village of San Cristobal, Guatemala. On this trip, our team assisted families for medical checkups. My job was to be an assistant, and was assigned a different medical profession each day of the trip. As an assistant, I learned how valuable communication was, by either making sure I was communicating with whomever I was assisting, and most importantly, trying to comprehend what the translators were trying to tell us. Since we had to understand two languages: Spanish and the native language of the village, our communication with one another was tested often. This musical was the most difficult show that I have ever been in, even compared to the high school shows I have done. Follies was a challenge for me, not only because it was music from Sondheim, the show was tough because the characters we were playing were going through midlife crises in their marriages and even with finding themselves. My director would talk to us after every rehearsal to break down each complex scene to help us get a further grasp on how to connect with the characters’ problems and how to make our connection of them believable to the audience. After doing the show, I deeply appreciate my director’s challenge for us to do the show, because the show contained material involving, adult experiences that weren’t discussed by middle school kids, nether the less would dare to perform a musical about. Those experiences my character went through for me, as an actor, made me dig deep to get a better understanding of what her and her husband were going through, and how to act on the reactions she would have from being given certain obstacles in her life.
