Food Americana Essay
Food Americana is likely one of the most unconventional history books you will ever read. When you think of history books, you don't think of a series of stories revolving around America's most-eaten cuisines. Despite Page's unique style of writing, it blends to be informative, practical, and entertaining all at the same time while reading.
Each chapter focuses on a type of food. Within that chapter is a small series of stories that show the origins of the dish, how America gained its love for it, and the food's current status. These stories have a variety of information, two of my favorites being stories of restaurants or food playing an important part in history. For example, doctors in WW2 would prescribe ice cream to soldiers suffering from combat fatigue. Food Americana differentiates international food and Americanized international food. Page view both as good food. That Americanized food is food made by immigrants in America that both parties now enjoy. He encourages people to try food from other nations while also telling you can enjoy foods that are considered unauthentic. Because food is constantly changing, and most food you eat is just a modified version of another. There are even recipes from famous restaurants at the end of each chapter that you can make at home.
When reading history books, you're unengaged with the text. Food Americana is a light book to read, and while it does have topics like discrimination, it handles it well. Page uses storytelling to explain food backgrounds making you compelled to read more. You manage to be interested in each chapter, even if it's dense with information, something most history books can't do. It's the type of book you read in your free time, not because you have to but because you
