Food Choices: Should The Government Control The Food?

There are moments in which some choose to enjoy a succulent candy bar and a refreshing soda, while others choose to eat a fresh cut salad and drink freshly squeezed lemonade. While both of those choices may sound acceptable to each individual, the government does not think so. They believe that there should be less sugary, unhealthy food and more fresh foods available to the consumer. The government should have no control over the food its citizens eat nor should they be able to control the choices that are provided. The government should have no control over the food or food choices that are provided because that limits personal choice. As Americans, we are given the liberty of freedom of speech and choice, in our First Amendment rights. If the government gains control over the production of food and limits what the American consumer can purchase, they may be doing more harm than good. Another way government control of food limits personal choice, is that we as people control what goes in our mouths. We have the ability to go purchase the food we think sounds good at that moment. The government and other officials are always saying, “Make your own choices!” or “Don’t be afraid to stand up for what’s right!” If they continue to push for more food control, they are not practicing what they preach. In history it is shown that when prohibition hit, alcohol still thrived as an industry; it was just illegal. If people want something, they are going to stop at nothing until they get it. The government can attempt to take away all of the things they want to, but there is no way to completely rid the nation of the foods that don’t fit their guidelines. Even if the government were able to get all the laws passed that would make food up to their standard, the laws would still get
