In the world, there are one billion people undernourished and one and a half billion more people overweight. In this day and age, where food has become a means of profit rather than a means of keeping people thriving and healthy, Raj Patel took it upon himself to explore why our world has become the home of these two opposite extremes: the stuffed and the starved. He does so by travelling the world and investigating the mess that was created by the big men (corporate food companies) when they took power away from the little men (farmers and farm workers) in order to provide for everyone else (the consumers) as conveniently and profitably as possible. In his book Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System, Patel reveals his findings and tries to reach out to people not just as readers, but also as consumers, in hopes of regaining control over the one thing that has brought us all down: the world food system.
Food is a critical part to the environment that a community lives in, yet food is not always just. Food justice is an important part of environmental justice, and Robert Gottlieb studied how food impacts communities. Gottlieb explained how food justice has links to equity, empowerment, and social justice as well. What I used to spend on a month in groceries, now gets me about two weeks,” explained Appelhanz, who is now visiting his local food bank in order to help make ends meet.

In the US, 40% of food produced, or approximately 365 million pounds of food, is wasted each day. Food waste, however, is a problem that extends beyond America, affecting billions of people as a global issue. The overwhelming amounts of food that are being discarded contribute to global warming and climate change, and prevent the massive number of hungry people from being able to eat nourishing meals. Humanity as a whole must be more mindful of the Earth and its health, as we are the source which most directly affect it. Due to the profound environmental impacts of food waste, a reduction in the amount disposed is necessary to create a more sustainable environment, and humans have a responsibility to protect the planet, even if it requires drastic changes to the current food system.
Throughout his journalistic essay, Eighner compares and contrasts between two opposing elements, classifies and divides important matters into several categories, and explains the effects of certain decisions in order to cover all aspects of dumpster diving. Eighner introduces the topic of dumpster diving by exhibiting an unusual interest for the definition and the history of dumpsters. He then progresses to elaborate on the impact this discovery had on his life and relates dumpster diving to his current situation of homelessness. By exploring the definition of dumpster diving, the author presents different views of scavenging, scournging, and foraging. Eighner reminds us that dumpster diving is merely the act of living from the refuse of others.
Food can be bought and wasted because of the ample amounts bought. Although, one may not give to the poor people of the world, food can be gone to compost, or can be used to make new food. Many belittle the fact that food waste is harmful to society. The second article, “How Norway is selling out-of-date food to help tackle waste” By Daniel Boffey shows A supermarket in Norway which is dedicated to selling expired and old food.
It not only wastes money but also causes some environmental problems, such as pollution and rats. However, many people do not realize the problem now. Considering that food waste is troubling, it is important to initiate a movement to motivate residents to reduce food waste, and the movement can be carried out through reeducatice and facilitative strategies. Food waste is a significant food-related issue in my community as well as many other communities and cities.
