Living in America makes it very easy to forget about the multitudes of people who are constantly struggling to find a meal. Of course, one is easily reminded of it whenever a commercial about donating money to those in need comes on or if one happens to walk past a homeless person on the street, but the reality of this problem rarely sinks in. It is currently estimated that 925 million people in the world are starving and if the world population grows as it is projected to, food production rates will need to double in developing countries by 2050. Whenever I skip a meal, a gnawing sensation blooms in my stomach, urging me to eat. This sensation is painful enough that my mind never stops thinking about it and it causes me to stop whatever I’m doing to go and find food. However, the slight pain I feel is nothing compared to what millions of other people feel every single day due to lack of food. Unlike me, they can’t just stop what they’re doing to go get food because there is none. While these people continue to suffer, the development of the world is slowed down. Many of those people who are starving could be extremely smart, but no one would ever know because they are constantly thinking about their lack of food. Although one may argue that there is a lack of education in countries were there isn’t food security so these extraordinary people would never be found. However, one problem should be solved and then the next one should be looked at. While education is very important, students would hardly be able to focus on their lessons while experiencing major hunger pains and they would most likely not have the mental power to understand what they were being told because of their lack of nutrition.
