1 and 6 Americans are food insecure, a staggering number when you look around and realize that anyone in the room with you right now could not know where their next meal is coming from. A more staggering number is that in 2012 over 34 million tons of edible food was thrown away in America. Over 40% of all food grown is uneaten, weather it is left in the field or on your plate. Evans goes further to say that consumers aren't the only ones to blame for our food waste habits, the food waste starts with the purchasers of crops. In the documentary Wasted farmers talk about the crops that go to waste because they are not the correct size, shape, or have blemishes. Roger Gordon, founder of Food Cowboy expressed the wasteful acts that purchasers partake in such as ordering trucks full of crops to just throw away because they were keep one degree below regular temperature. Gordon also spoke on farmers loading their crops onto trucks to find out that purchasers didn't buy any and their crops have to be thrown away. Purchasers won't buy the crops that the consumers won't buy at the grocery stores. A banana farmer on the wasted film showed his truck load of banana's that were not purchased because they did not have the correct curvature. A peach farmer on the wasted film showed the processing plant throwing away hundreds of peaches because they weren't the correct circumference. Purchasers have watched the behavior of consumers when they won't buy the bruised bananas, the bag of grapes with a few wilted ones, or the ear of corn that just isn't yellow yet.
